SYNOPSIS:
In this story there is a 14-year-old Willis Tweedy. He is telling the story as a memory. First his grandmother dies leaving the whole family and town in grief. Soon after Grandpa Blakeslee- a major character and currently a widow- decides to get married to the milliner, Miss Love who works in his store. After the mariage the entire town is gossiping about them, though no one understands that Grandpa Blakeslee needed someone to take care of him and he won't pay a colored person.n The family felt that Miss Love was going to try and have a child with Grandpa to gain their inheiritance, but in actuality she just wanted the house not the money.
Miss Love had somehow been able to get Grandpa, who was known to be a miser, to get her what she wanted. First he got her a horse, then she wanted to go to new York so he took Mary Willis and Hoyt's trip so that they could go, and finally she got him to like cars and buy one to sell in his shop.
Throughout time Miss Love and Grandpa are falling in love more rapidly.
Then after a few weeks Grandpa Blakeslee became extremely sick, though it didn't help that he had broken some ribs when he got robbed. He was going hysterical and was talking about memories going back and forth. Miss Love then told Will that she was pregnent. He was so shocked not knowing whether or not this was intentional. She didn't tell the the family about the baby till after the reading of the will. After Grandpa died they changed Cold Sassy into Progressive City.

CONNECTIONS:
TO THE CLASSROOM:
  • In this book many people leave and they are unable to keep in touch. Similarly in the classroom sometimes good friends leave and it gets hard to stay in touch.
TO OTHER CLASSROOM TEXTS:

  • This year we read the book The House on Mango Street where it was mostly just memories. Cold Sassy Tree is just one person's long memory. Both books are refections of the main character's lives.

TO THE HOME:
  • In this book the parents are teaching their children manners just like my parents to. The family is always there for each other as well as my family. When the family was in grief they dealt with it together, that's the same way it is with my family.

TO THE COMMUNITY:
  • Here in St.Martin when an accident happens most of the area knows. This is the same as in Cold Sassy, for example when grandma died the entire town was in grief, or when Grandpa Blakeslee asked for a party when he died the whole Community came to support.

TO ME:
  • I felt very sad while reading this book because it reminded me of loved ones that I have lost.
